亀の性別は尻尾の太さと長さ、肛門の位置で判別できる。尻尾の裏側に肛門があり、尻尾が太く長く肛門が甲羅よりも外側にあるのがオス、尻尾が細く短く肛門が甲羅の内側にあるのがメス。
